Construction on Hamburg Logistics Park, a 1.9-million-square-foot industrial park off Interstate 78 in Perry Township, officially began Tuesday.
State and local officials gathered with the developers, MRP Industrial of West Chester and Hillwood Development Co. of Dallas, for a groundbreaking ceremony on the former Perry Golf Course where the distribution center will be built on 165 acres.
Hamburg Logistics Park will be comprised of three buildings. Conlan Co. of Atlanta, general contractors on the project, will begin construction immediately on a 336,000-square-foot building and a 1.24 million-square-foot building. Both are expected to be completed late next year.
A third building of 324,000 square feet also is planned.
Thomas C. McKeon, executive director of the Berks County Industrial Development Authority, said the industrial park’s 1.24 million-square-foot warehouse, when completed, “will be the largest speculative building ever developed in eastern Pennsylvania.”
The distribution center market “is very strong,” in Berks and the Lehigh Valley, McKeon said.
“Everything is changing to online retailing. When that happens, you have to get your product to consumers very quickly,” McKeon said.
“That makes our location ideal as that market continues to keep growing.”
The plan includes flexibility to build for a variety of tenants who could require anything from 100,000 square feet of space to 1.3 million square feet, according to the MRP website.
Parking spaces could include more than 1,200 spaces to more than 700 trailer storage stalls.
MRP developed Lehigh Valley Crossings, a four-building, 1.28 million-square-foot industrial park in Lower Macungie Township.
