The Greater Lehigh Valley has dodged the latest round of department store closings.
J.C. Penney announced in February it would be closing 130 to 140 stores. Today it released the locations for 138 closings.
While there are several closings among the 34 stores the chain operates in Pennsylvania, none are in the Greater Lehigh Valley. J.C. Penney has stores in Whitehall Township and Stroud Township that are unaffected by the closures.
The nearest stores on the closure list are in Willow Grove and King of Prussia.
About 5,000 jobs will be lost nationwide with the closures, most of which will occur in June. Most affected stores will begin liquidation on April 17.
J.C. Penney operates more than 1,000 retail stores in 49 states and Puerto Rico.
