The number of construction projects recently completed or underway in the Greater Lehigh Valley is making a strong economic impact in the region.
From the revitalization efforts of a once dormant downtown Allentown to rebuilding efforts in Reading to the rising number of distribution and warehouse centers seemingly everywhere, a lot is happening in the region’s cities and townships.
Fortunately, there are many contractors and excavating companies in the area to help make possible these projects.
Here to answer this week’s “Behind the List” questions is Keith Malcolm, owner and president of Semmel Excavating Inc. in Allentown.
Lehigh Valley Business: How long has Semmel Excavating Inc. been operating in the Greater Lehigh Valley and what are its primary services?
Keith Malcolm: Semmel Excavating was originally founded by Ralph and Ruth Semmel in 1945. The company was acquired by Henry Janssen and incorporated in 1967. I began work as an engineer and estimator in 1973, eventually acquiring the company in 1984.
Our services include earthwork, utility work, site concrete and paving work for commercial, industrial and institutional clients throughout the Lehigh Valley. Over the years, we have also developed a special niche in the sinkhole repair business.
LVB: What have been some of the biggest hardships and opportunities Semmel has encountered throughout its years in business?
Malcolm: The biggest hardship was the recession of 2008 and 2009. After 25 years of steady growth, it was a challenge to adapt to the decrease in sales and margins, as well as having to let go some valuable employees.
Today, opportunities exist in all health care related fields, colleges and universities and oddly enough parks and recreation. Spending and investment continue to be made in these areas.
LVB: What have been some of the most notable projects Semmel has completed on a local level? What are some projects that are underway or in the pipeline?
