Carpenter Technology acquires additive manufacturing technology company

CalRAM is a California-based manufacturer of powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing technologies used in the aerospace, defense, power generation and oil and gas industries.

Carpenter, a producer and distributor of premium specialty alloys, said with the proliferation of 3-D manufacturing, CalRAM will add to its capabilities in a growing field.

“CalRAM’s proven expertise and strong customer relationships will accelerate and enhance our capabilities …,” Tony Thene, Carpenter president and CEO, said in a release. “This strategic acquisition builds upon our existing additive manufacturing capabilities and provides direct entry into the rapidly expanding part-production segment of the additive manufacturing value chain.”

Thene said Carpenter customers are seeking partners who can not only produce parts, but also have the expertise to help determine the best materials and processes to fit their needs in demanding applications. This acquisition will help the company do that, he said.
