Energy provider E.G. Smith Inc. of Spring Township marked the opening of its new headquarters at 1 Corporate Blvd. in South Heidelberg Township on Thursday afternoon.
The building includes 3,000 square feet of office space, plus 4,000 square feet of warehouse and garage space to house the company’s vehicle fleet.
E.G. Smith offers heating oil, propane, heating, ventilation and air conditioning service and other energy services to thousands of residential and commercial customers in Berks County.
The Lancaster County-based Rhoads Energy Family of Companies, the corporate parent of E.G. Smith, has been in business since 1917, said Scott Burky, chief operating officer for E.G. Smith Inc.
“We wanted to stay in Berks County. We’ve been buying a lot of smaller oil and propane companies over the years; we thought it was important to stay local,” Burky said.
The company’s locations include Boyertown, Lancaster, and in Chester and Lebanon counties, he said.
The company leased space on Penn Avenue in Spring Township about 2 ½ miles away, but has since vacated that site and now owns and occupies the property at 1 Corporate Blvd.
“The staff is all folks from Berks County; we wanted to make sure we would retain all our employees,” Burky said.
There are additional opportunities to grow the business over the next 12 to 24 months, he added.
Benchmark Construction Co. of Brownstown managed construction of the new facility. Stackhouse Bensinger Inc. of Reading performed land-planning services for the project, and Providence Engineering Corp. of Lancaster handled design.
Burky declined to disclose the cost of the construction. He said the building was finished on time and under budget
