Grants available for Allentown businesses to install security cameras

The city announced that $30,000 in matching grants are being made available in amounts of up to $3,000 for businesses that add a complying video surveillance system.

The new program is called SCAN – Security Camera Assistance Network – and it’s a program with wide-reaching benefits, said Daniel Diaz, business development manager for the city.

“It not only helps improve the safety of Allentown’s businesses, but it can help the police solve crimes,” Diaz said.

The program requires a surveillance system, which meets certain technical requirements that are detailed at www.allentown.pa.gov, and includes two exterior cameras, two interior cameras and a digital video recorder.

The grants will pay for up to half of the system to help make the equipment and installation more affordable.

“We did some research on it, and you can get a pretty good system that meets the parameters at a pretty good price point,” Diaz said.

Mayor Ed Pawlowski said video surveillance has proven effective in fighting crime in Allentown.

“Our crime-fighting efforts have been greatly enhanced by our street camera program,” he said. “This program will aid retailers and other small businesses that want to improve security, but have been unable to find the funds to pay for a camera system.”

Applications will require:

• Pictures of the building indicating where the surveillance camera will be located, and at least one picture showing the entire façade of the building.

• Documentation from the property owner (if not the applicant) authorizing the proposed work.

• Two estimates from licensed vendors detailing the SCAN minimum specified system. (Two exterior cameras, two interior cameras and a digital video recorder. The application contains a list of requirements for surveillance system equipment. Equipment must be compatible with the city’s software.
