A national life insurance company with a prominent Greater Lehigh Valley presence will build a new corporate office for 1,500 employees, with construction soon to start.

New York-based Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America wants to build a three-story office building on Bath Pike off Route 512 in Hanover Township, Northampton County, according to township planning commission documents.

While appearing before the planning commission, the applicant went under the name GLICA Bethlehem LLC to present its land development plan for Hanover Corporate Center 2, which received approval by the township commissioners in January.

Now, the project is ready to break ground, according to Yvonne Kutz, township zoning officer.

Kutz confirmed that The Norwood Co. of Malvern is doing the site work and Langan Engineering of Bethlehem is performing the engineering services.

Rob Risnychok, vice president/project executive for Norwood, said construction could start in the next 30 to 45 days and the building could be finished in June 2016. Norwood is awaiting permits and will construct the entire building.

Officials from Guardian Life Insurance declined to answer questions for the story.

However, a corporate spokeswoman issued a statement confirming that Guardian intends to build a new office building in Hanover Township.

“The new building will be designed to create a quality and sustainable work environment with state-of-the-art amenities for our employees,” said Jeanette Volpi, who is based in New York. “We remain committed to the Lehigh Valley and to being an employer of choice in the area.”

The company, which has been in the area since 1984, has two locations near the new site, including an office at 81 Highland Ave. and another across the street at 3900 Burgess Place. Both offices are in Hanover Township, Northampton County.
