Continuing to build on its development of its LR Electric refuse truck, Mack Trucks said it has delivered a pre-model of the truck to Republic Services to begin in-service trials.

Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, Republic Services Inc. is the second largest provider of non-hazardous solid waste collection, transfer, disposal, recycling and energy services in the United States by revenue.

Republic will be testing the Mack LR Electric in North Carolina.

Mack said the model it made for Republic features an automated side loader refuse body optimized for next generation electric collection trucks. It has a strong, yet lightweight body that maximizes hauling capacity. Its hydraulic system is designed to be more energy efficient by only drawing power when needed, which helps extend battery life.

Mack said it will use what it learns from the trials to further refine the truck as it prepares to accept orders for the truck, which will begin production at Mack Lehigh Valley starting next year.

Republic will be evaluating the truck for its range, functionality and payload capacity.

“The LR Electric offers numerous benefits, including zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and quieter operation, and we look forward to partnering with Republic to meet their business needs through this fully electric truck,” said Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks senior vice president of North American sales and commercial operations.

The Mack LR Electric was first released as a prototype in 2018.  The company had been testing the truck with the New York City Department of Sanitation.
