The report cited new pipeline capacity for boosting the production.
Texas still is far ahead of Pennsylvania in natural gas production, producing 6.8 trillion cubic feet last year.
“Producers added 700 new wells in the second half of 2013. During the first half of the year, there were 4,200 producing wells in Pennsylvania,” said Matt Henderson, the center’s shale gas asset manager. By the end of 2013, there were 4,917 producing wells. Another 1,225 wells are waiting for pipeline connections. They represent 225 billion cubic feet of untapped gas, according to the Penn State center’s calculations.
Officials at the center project production will reach 3.8 trillion to 4.5 trillion cubic feet by the end of 2014.
