One year after opening in downtown Reading, Baker College is closing, according to news reports.
The private, nonprofit school is the only campus of the Flint, Mich.-based college’s 13 satellites that is not in Michigan. Founded in 1911, Baker College has more than 23,000 students enrolled at all of its campuses.
About 20 faculty members and five office and administration employees had been hired to work at the satellite campus at 606 Court St. when it opened in April 2016. About 20 students had enrolled in its inaugural class.
It is unknown whether employees will be offered jobs at Baker’s other campuses in Michigan and if tuition will be returned to students who have paid for the upcoming semester.

Baker’s Reading campus focuses on matching degrees to match the needs in the local labor market. It offered associate-degree programs in business administration, medical assistance and human services. The school’s online campus offered bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and a doctoral degree in business administration.
Baker College had renovated the four-story, 26,000-square-foot building that it bought and that had been the home of the former Pace Institute.
