Blue Ridge Cable said it will be virtually doubling the internet speeds it offers
The company will be offering an up to a 2 gig high speed internet package to both residential and commercial customers.
The new package includes speeds up to 2000×40 Mbps for cable/HFC network customers and up to 2×2 Gig symmetrical speeds for PON/fiber network customers.
“I am proud of our team and their continued efforts to innovate and introduce new products and faster speeds to our customers and the communities we serve,” said Mark Masenheimer, vice president of operations.
“Our new 2 Gig product is just the beginning; as we continue to build out our fiber network, our customers can be confident they are getting a fast, reliable internet connection using the latest technology at a competitive price.”
The new speed is available at a standard rate of $129.95 per month for residential customers and $299.95 per month for business customers.

There’s a new name for a major regional internet, TV, and phone provider. RCN has changed its name to Astound Broadband. At the same time its business services will now be known as Astound Business Solutions.
RCN isn’t alone in the change. It is joining its partner brands Grande, Wave, enTouch and Digital West under the brand.
Together the companies will be the sixth-largest internet, TV and phone operator in the U.S. under the Astound name.
“Astound is the parent brand, and we have these regional brands that have all been operating separately,” said Sanford Ames Jr., general manager of RCN Pennsylvania. “We decided it was time to join together under one brand.”
The name change was official Jan. 12. Over the coming weeks, Astound will update the branding of all its properties and assets, from vehicles and signs to websites and employee uniforms.
To emphasize regional service focus, each entity will retain subbrands under the Astound umbrella: Astound Broadband powered by RCN in the Northeastern U.S;, Astound Broadband powered by Grande in Texas; and Astound Broadband powered by Wave on the West Coast. Recently acquired systems Harris Broadband in Central Texas and WOW!’s Illinois, Indiana and Maryland markets will follow by midyear.
“This is an exciting time for our company with our new name solidifying our commitment to ‘astound’ our customers each and every day through our national fiber-rich network, fast reliable service, mission-critical connectivity, and award-winning customer service,” said Jim Holanda, CEO of Astound Broadband. “Keeping ourselves grounded in our deep-rooted focus on customer service is at the core of what we do. We’ve been part of our local communities for years. Our dedicated teams will continue to serve the areas where they live and work.”
Ames said customers should see a change in name only. They will still be offering the same products with the same employees and operating out of the same offices.
Still, he said he believes the new name is good for the company.
“RCN has been RCN forever. All of the brands have strong name recognition in their markets. We wanted to pick a name that reflected who we are and what we do.”
