Geisinger’s board of directors has appointed Dr. Jaewon Ryu as president and CEO, according to a June 20 press release.

Ryu, who has served as Geisinger’s interim president and CEO since November 2018 and executive vice president and chief medical officer since September 2016, becomes the seventh CEO in Geisinger’s 104-year history.

He succeeds Dr. David T. Feinberg, who left Geisinger earlier this year to assume a leadership role at Google.

“I am honored by this appointment and feel blessed to lead an organization that is making better health easier for our patients, members and communities,” Ryu said. “I am incredibly proud of the progress we are driving in expanding our value-based care model. Geisinger has a bright future ahead, and I am committed to building upon our legacy working with our dedicated and talented physicians and staff.”

Geisinger conducted a nationwide search for CEO that involved “some of the brightest, most-accomplished health care leaders in the country,” according to Geisinger Chairman John C. Bravman

Prior to joining Geisinger, Ryu served as president of Integrated Care Delivery for Humana in Louisville, Kentucky, and chief medical officer at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System in Chicago.

He has held various leadership roles at Kaiser-Permanente and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and was a White House Fellow at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Ryu is an emergency medicine physician with a license to practice in Pennsylvania and California, and serves as a diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Geisinger is a health system serving more than 1.5 million patients in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The system includes 13 hospital campuses, a nearly 600,000-member health plan, two research centers and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton.
