The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is once again selling a hard-to-find spirit through an online lottery system.

The PLCB has 1,931 bottles of limited-release Pappy Van Winkle whiskey.

According to the PLCB, the Kentucky whiskeys, produced by Pappy Van Winkle’s grandson using recipes dating back four generations, are among the most sought after in the world. The Van Winkle bourbons have been produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery since 2002.

Limited-Release Lotteries are open to Pennsylvania residents and licensees age 21 or older.

Those wanting to purchase one of the bottles will have to go on the board’s website to register for and enter the lottery. Pennsylvania residents and licensees will have until 5 p.m. Jan. 8 to opt in to one or more of the drawings.

Drawings will be held, in the following order, to award the right to purchase individual bottles as follows:

Pennsylvania launches online lottery ticket sales

Pennsylvanians can now play the lottery online.

No more schlepping to the mini market,  Pennsylvanians can now buy their lottery tickets online.

As the Pennsylvania Lottery works to expand its online offerings consumers tickets for Powerball and Mega Millions lottery games can be made on its website, www.PaiLottery.com, or app.

The Lottery launched online gaming in 2018 with online versions of scratch-off games and Keno.

“Selling lottery online is a big part of our effort to appeal to new customers and meet our players where they already are — which is online,” said Drew Svitko, executive director of the Pa. Lottery.

Lottery officials said the online play will be similar to going to a retailer to purchase tickets.

Players will be able to choose their own numbers or select the “quick pick” option to receive randomly selected numbers. Players also have the option to purchase multiple tickets and to buy tickets up to 26 drawings, or 13 weeks, in advance.

Of course the new offering begs the question, how will online sales hurt the retailers which lottery players currently go to buy their tickets. While opinions may differ, one lottery merchant who spoke with Lehigh Valley Business, wasn’t overly concerned.

“I don’t think it will have a huge impact,” said Dwight Taylor, whose family owns the Taylor Family Mini Markets in Bethlehem.

While there is foot traffic from people coming in to specifically purchase lottery tickets, those customers tend not to buy other things while in the store, he said.

Stores make their money when customers win, and he said while it is revenue it’s not something most retailers count on for “livelihood.”

After what it called a record-breaking year, the Pennsylvania Lottery has renewed its contract with lottery provider, Scientific Games Corp., of Las Vegas to manage its iLottery.

The contract gives the firm, which has been running the state’s Lottery and new Lottery online gaming, a 7-year contract with three additional 1-year renewal options.

The company launched the Pa. Lottery’s iLottery games in May of last year. The company said it was its most successful iLottery platform launch to date in North America.

In its first year, the iLottery games brought in $342 million in gaming, and as of this month, it has reached $642 million in gaming.

The new iLottery contract includes implementation, operation, maintenance and support of the iLottery solution and services, iLottery and web application, and web-based presence.

“Selling lottery online is a big part of our effort to modernize the lottery, appeal to new customers and meet our players where they already are, which is online, while generating new funds to benefit older Pennsylvanians,” said Drew Svitko, executive director of the Pennsylvania Lottery. “Sales of these new digital products as well as sales for our instant and draw-based games at Pennsylvania Lottery retailers grew beyond all expectations over the last year.”

Svitko added that the Lottery overall has experienced another record-breaking year in 2019.

It had $4.5 billion in total retail sales led by $3 billion instant scratch game sales.

He said fiscal year 2018-19 was the Lottery’s eighth consecutive year of providing more than $1 billion to benefit older Pennsylvanians.
