The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry said the state’s unemployment rate was down one-tenth of a percentage point over the month to 3.9% in December.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry has released its preliminary employment figures for January 2022, showing the state’s unemployment rate down one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.4 percent from the month prior. 

Lehigh Valley received $1.6 million from the state to entice workers to finish their education and return to the workforce after COVID 19 shut down most of the economy for more than a year.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry is set to resume making payments through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) programs but could see a gap in benefits after a delay in approval by the federal government.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry paid more than $29.5 billion in unemployment benefits since Pennsylvania’s businesses first closed in mid-March as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Many life-sustaining businesses across Pennsylvania are hiring and this new portal will help connect them with people looking for a job,” said Secretary of Labor and Industry Jerry Oleksiak at a Monday virtual press conference.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry awarded $2.4 million in workforce development grants to counties across the commonwealth. The funds awarded are designed to help employers partner with schools to provide career training.
