Weis Market in Fogelsville becomes grocery chain’s first LEED certified store

Weis Markets Inc. has 204 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia. The Weis Market at 7801 Glenlivet Drive West, opened in 2012.
Weis was recently awarded LEED silver certification for constructing a 65,800-square-foot building that addresses recycling water conservation and light pollution issues, as well as for its use of green building materials in its construction.
The use of environmental features enabled the Weis store to qualify for certification under the U.S. Green Building Council. The features at the store include skylights, energy-efficient fluorescent lighting and native plants and trees to eliminate the need for irrigation.
Christa Kraftician, a director with Spillman Farmer Architects in Bethlehem, presented Patti Olenick, sustainability manager at Weis Markets, with a plaque to recognize the achievement.
Kraftician sits on the board of directors of the Green Building Council.
