New LVIA service addresses common problem

t can happen to even the most savvy business traveler, but now Lehigh Valley International Airport has a solution.
The airport has introduced Flippit — an airport-authorized service that allows travelers to securely ship TSA-prohibited items back to their home or another address, making it easy to recover personal belongings instead of discarding them.
Colin Riccobon, spokesman for the Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority, said it’s a common problem that travelers don’t realize they have a prohibited item until they get to the TSA checkpoint.
“People show up and realize it’s a problem,” he said.
By then, they have to either get out of line and take the item back to their car – possibly missing a flight. Or, if they’re not parked at the airport, they may have no choice to surrender or dispose of the item.
That can pose a real problem if the item is expensive or of sentimental value.
Riccobon gave the example of a pocketknife that is a family heirloom handed down from their grandfather.
Rather than losing the item, the passenger can put it in an envelope, fill out the address and pay a fee of $29 or more to ship the item depending on its size.
“People have used it already,” Riccobon said. “It’ just another level of service we offer.”
