The move allows Serfass Construction to offer a one-stop service to its clients by performing both design and construction services, as well as handling the municipal approval and permitting process, he said.

“We have a lot of owners who come to us and they want everything turnkey,” said Kevin Serfass, vice president. “It was a way for us to bring everything in-house. That’s the way we see the construction industry going.”

Serfass declined to disclose the financial terms.

Under the deal, Bonsall Shafferman and its three licensed architects moved from office space at 414 West Broad St. in Bethlehem to the second floor of Serfass’s office at 3764 Mauch Chunk Road.

“The lines of communication are much more direct,” Serfass said. “They are in our office now.”

Bonsall Shafferman will retain its name, however, and continue to work on projects for existing clients. And it will continue to do only architectural design for some clients, he added.

Fred Bonsall, principal and founder of the firm, said the acquisition was unplanned.

“Basically, from our standpoint, I was thinking ahead in what I might do in five years and the phone rang,” Bonsall said.

He described the acquisition as a meeting of the minds.

“I think we will both grow,” Bonsall said. “The neat thing is we have added resources. The biggest advantage is having the ability to learn from and work with each other.”
