Without changing its historic character, one couple is looking to make Downtown Nazareth into a more vibrant, modern place for people to live and work through adaptive reuse of old buildings.
Jay Orwig and his wife, Rebecca, have purchased several properties on Main Street in Downtown Nazareth the past few years and most recently snapped up three structures for nearly $3 million that they plan to transform into apartments and commercial space.
The Orwigs, who operate their property management business under the name J R Orwig Properties LLC, recently bought 49-55 S. Main St., 56-62 S. Main St. and a property on Belvidere Street.
Altogether in Nazareth, they own 15 buildings and 127 apartment units.
“It’s definitely more of a niche market; we’ve had a tremendous amount of people wanting to move to Nazareth,” Jay Orwig said.
A lot of people graduating from local colleges also seem interested in moving to Nazareth, noted Rebecca.
“They like the intimacy of a small town,” she said.
Apartment units rent from $995 to $1,095.
New plans call for apartments and commercial spaces along both sides of Main Street.
One of the planned new additions is Emily’s Ice Cream, owned by Rebecca’s mother, which will move from Route 191 in Nazareth to a corner spot at 100 Main St.
