Mid-Atlantic restaurant and convenience chain Sheetz has been named to this year’s “Companies that Care” list by Great Place To Work and PEOPLE Magazine.
Now in its ninth year, the annual list highlights the top companies in the U.S. that have succeeded in business while also demonstrating outstanding respect, care and concern for their employees and a deep commitment to their communities. Sheetz ranks 10th on this year’s list, maintaining its top 10 status after ranking 9th last year.
Sheetz has been ranked on the national list for four straight years and five out of six years.
“We do not take this recognition lightly as supporting our communities and employees is central to everything we do,” Sheetz President & CEO Travis Sheetz said in a statement. “We are truly humbled to be standing alongside some of the leading companies in the country that are also committed to making a positive impact in their communities.”
Of the employees surveyed at Sheetz, 90% said it is a great place to work compared to 57% of employees at a typical U.S.-based company. In addition, 92% of Sheetz employees feel good about the ways the company contributes to the community.
Sheetz’s inclusion in this year’s “Companies that Care” list is the latest in a series of recognitions. In July, Sheetz ranked second in the convenience store category on Newsweek’s “America’s Best Retailers” list. The rankings were based on the results of an independent survey consisting of more than 140,000 evaluations collected across 43 categories.
According to a release, Sheetz offers competitive wages and a great benefits package to all employees, including medical and dental insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan, an employee stock ownership plan, tuition reimbursement, quarterly bonuses, flexible schedules, opportunities for advancement, vacation time and more.
Sheetz also works with several charitable organizations including the Special Olympics, which the company has supported for over 30 years through financial contributions, product donations and event volunteers. Sheetz also fights hunger through weekly food donations to local food banks and works with Sheetz For the Kidz, an employee-driven non-profit organization which has helped more than 182,000 children in need, living in the communities Sheetz serves, celebrate the holidays. Sheetz also turns every new store opening into an opportunity to give back, donating to the state’s Special Olympics chapter and a local food bank as part of each celebration.
“Businesses are vital pillars in the communities where they operate,” said Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place To Work. “Caring for your people and your community isn’t something you do after you build a successful business; it’s how to make your business successful.”
This year’s Companies that Care rankings are based on over 1.3 million employee survey responses and data from companies representing more than 8.4 million employees, per a release. Of those surveys, more than 1 million came from employees at companies eligible for this year’s list and these rankings are based on that feedback.
“Witnessing the innovative spirit with which these companies invest in their employees, communities, and the world is truly invigorating,” says Charlotte Triggs, PEOPLE GM and editor-in-chief. “Their commitment reflects our mission, to feature what happens when ordinary people do extraordinary work.”
Established in 1952, Sheetz, Inc. operates over 790 store locations throughout Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, and North Carolina.
