CEWA Technologies was among 23 finalists competing for the prize in the Energy Sprout competition sponsored by the Sustainable Energy Fund and West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund.
The competition was open to Pennsylvania businesses, communities and residents. More than $160,000 in grants were awarded in the contest that concentrated on renewable energy and energy conservation and efficiency projects.
“Focusing on these areas will lead to models and technology that are not only better for the environment, but can put money back in the wallets of their users,” said John Costlow, president and CEO of the Sustainable Energy Fund.
CEWA plans to use the grant to help manufacture a solar concentrator dish to help bring clean energy and water to remote parts of the world. The grant would help reduce manufacturing cost and time-per-unit. The dish would be capable of delivering a 33.5 kilowatts of thermal power and 14 kilowatts of electricity, or a combination of the two, at a price competitive with fossil fuels.
Founded in April 2009, CEWA Technologies develops and markets concentrated solar power dishes.
The company first tested the commercial application of its solar concentrator with a dish installed on the roof of the Flat Iron Building in Bethlehem.
Sustainable Energy Fund and West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund are nonprofit organizations that support and finance sustainable energy solutions.
