Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network
Astrid Gonzalez Parrilla joined Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network last year as senior vice president, clinical operations.
Her mother, who survived a stroke when she was 26, has been a lifetime inspiration to Parrilla. “It is because of her that I became an occupational therapist, and because of people like her that I have transitioned to be a health care leader. As an occupational therapist, I realized that I needed to be at the table when important decisions were made. In order to influence change, I needed to be an advocate for patients, but equally as important, an advocate for staff.”
Her mentor, Dr. Carolyn Geis, “taught me that providers give up a little of themselves when caring for others. Health care is a profession guided by a higher calling, and we must acknowledge the contributions of each team member. We should extend grace to others and to ourselves. Many providers wanted to do more for COVID-19 patients, and I saw their despair from not being able to. Showing grace, encouraging each other and celebrating recovery have been essential parts of my approach to leadership.”
