Blue Ridge launches 1-gigabyte internet service

The cable television and internet provider said it doubled its speed in the first quarter of 2017, and in the third quarter, introduced a complete home Wi-Fi solution.
One-gigabyte, or 1,000 megabits per second, is the latest upgrade from Blue Ridge and offers customers the ability to download a high-definition movie in 40 seconds, the company said.
“We have around 160,000 customers throughout northeastern Pennsylvania and some in central Pennsylvania,” said Mark Masenheimer, vice president of operations for Blue Ridge.
The company serves many customers in many rural areas underserved by other providers and collaborates with PenTeleData to offer services to businesses. It also offers internet to a smaller group of business customers.
Masenheimer described 1-gigabyte internet speed as one of the fastest speeds on the market and as the way the industry is heading, with consumers desiring faster speeds.
