Gas prices continue to rise both locally and nationally.
In Pennsylvania, the average price for a gallon of gas was a penny higher this week at $3.136, according to the latest AAA East Central‘s Gas Price Report.
In the Lehigh Valley, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.091on Feb. 23, up from $3.086 the week prior.
Meanwhile, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline was up two cents over the past week to $2.94. However, gas prices are the lowest they’ve been for this time of year since 2021. This week’s national average is eight cents more than a month ago but nine less than a year ago.
According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased last week from 8.30 million barrels per day to 8.74 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 259.1 million barrels to 255.8 million.
AAA said that Gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.4 million barrels per day.
At the close of Wednesday’s formal trading session, West Texas Intermediate rose $2.86 to settle at $65.19 a barrel. The EIA reports that crude oil inventories decreased by 9 million barrels from the previous week. At 419.8 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 5% below the five-year average for this time of year.
